About Optometry

Optometrists (O.D., Doctor of Optometry) are independent primary health care providers who specialize in the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures.

Optometrists are uniquely qualified to deal with functional vision disorders and/or problems in visual processing which affect reading, computer use, and other aspects of learning, development and behavior. They also work with the visual rehabilitation of people with head trauma, brain injuries, etc.

As an optometrist I examine the eyes for disease and prescribed glasses and contact lenses to help compensate for vision defects. I also test and treat problems with focusing, eye alignment problems that can cause eyestrain and reading problems. I also go beyond these traditional optometric treatments to deal with the whole person. The eyes and the vision system cannot be isolated from the rest of the body. Our eyesight doesn't happen in a vacuum. It has its roots in our total being, our genetic makeup, the food we eat, the work environment, it exposure to toxins whether airborne or otherwise, stress, etc.. The body has a natural wisdom. Given the right nourishment-beliefs, foods, herbs, exercises, supplements, and various other treatments, the body and the eyes will heal themselves.

All healing is about bringing balance to the system. When the energy in the body is out of balance disease can occur including problems with our eyes. Vision balance and treatment involves good nutrition, detoxification, homeopathy, Chinese herbs, Ayurvedic treatment, Syntonic Phototherapy, and special exercises including but not limited to the Bates method.
